This session will explore how pharmacy preceptors can advance equity-minded education and culturally responsive practices within residency training. Participants will gain practical strategies to foster inclusive rotation environments that support diverse learners. The session will also introduce evidence-based educational activities designed to enhance residents' cultural competence and promote health equity in clinical practice.

About the Presenter

Dr. Sally Arif, PharmD, BCCP is a tenured professor, speaker, clinical pharmacist, and fierce advocate for advancing equity and inclusion in health professions. She serves on several national health and educational advisory boards and is a strategist focused on embedding diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives systemically and sustainably across healthcare, higher education, and post-graduate training programs. With nearly two decades of healthcare experience and numerous awards for her exemplary teaching, Sally founded the Equity-Minded Collective, a consultancy committed to addressing systemic inequities, fostering inclusive environments, and building healthier communities. Dr. Arif’s book, Shift: A Practical Guide for Cultivating Equity and Inclusion in Healthcare Education was released in 2025.

Constructive Opportunities: Leveraging Emotional Intelligence and Effective Time Management

Pharmacy preceptors often face the emotional strain of balancing their clinical responsibilities with the need to provide meaningful, constructive opportunities to their learners. In addition, they often struggle with navigating learners’ emotions while delivering constructive feedback, aiming to be supportive yet honest in a way that doesn’t discourage growth.

About the Presenters

Dr. Reba Forbess is the Pharmacy Operations Manager at Houston Methodist Willowbrook in Houston, TX. She is also a Clinical Pharmacist at HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood in Kingwood, TX. In her current role, she steers research, medication safety, staff development, and education for the pharmacy, as well as serving at the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Coordinator. Her current professional interests include medication reconciliation, transitions of care, patient assistance, and pharmacy staff development. She has spoken at regional and national conferences on emotional intelligence, positive culture and constructive feedback.

 

 

Faith Rutherford, PharmD, is a dedicated and accomplished pharmacist based from Houston, Texas, with an extensive background in health-system pharmacy, research, and leadership. She earned her Doctor of Pharmacy from Texas Southern University (2019–2023) and holds Associate of Science and Associate of Arts degrees from Lone Star College, Kingwood. Currently, she serves as a Clinical Specialist Pharmacist PRN at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital, where she performs inpatient and transitional care duties while precepting APPE students as needed, and completed her Pharmacist Residency (PGY1) at the same institution. Faith also has over two decades of experience at HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood, where she has progressed through roles such as Clinical Pharmacist, Lead Pharmacy Technician, Pharmacy Automation Administrator, and Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, showcasing her expertise in inventory management, sterile product preparation, and team leadership. Her research contributions include a CMS-funded study on prostate cancer disparities among African American men (2020), and she has delivered numerous presentations at professional seminars, earning accolades like the 1st Place TSHP Pharmacist Poster Competition (2025) and the Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists Leo F. and Ann Godley Residency Fellowship Award (2024). As an active leader in the Gulf Coast Society of Health-System Pharmacists, Faith combines her clinical acumen with a passion for advancing pharmacy practice and community health.
